Paint beneath vast western skies, among sculpted red-rock cliffs, vineyard valleys, and winding river corridors. This three-day plein air retreat with Colorado Mountain Expeditions and landscape painter John Lintott offers an immersive painting experience in one of Colorado’s most visually striking regions.
Most Colorado Mountain Expeditions art retreats take place in high alpine environments filled with towering peaks and evergreen forests. This retreat is different. Set in the high desert of western Colorado, it offers dramatic canyons, sun-warmed stone, open horizons, and constantly shifting light — a completely unique landscape to explore through paint.
Based in the Grand Junction area, participants will paint in the Colorado National Monument, along the Colorado River, and across the bold ridgelines of the Bookcliffs. Each day brings new scenery, changing light, and fresh opportunities to strengthen your outdoor painting practice.
John will guide you through his plein air process, from compositional sketching and scene design to developing confident oil paintings on site. His teaching emphasizes understanding color, light, and atmosphere through direct observation, helping you paint with greater clarity and intention.
This retreat is designed for painters with some landscape experience who want focused instruction without strenuous hiking. Painting locations require only short, easy walks, allowing you to stay comfortably immersed in the landscape throughout the day.
Lodging is at the Wine Country Inn, a peaceful vineyard estate. Each guest enjoys a private room with modern comforts, complimentary breakfast each morning, and relaxed evenings dining at thoughtfully chosen local restaurants.
Colorado Mountain Expeditions handles all logistics, including daily transportation to painting locations and on-site support from a CME field guide. After returning each afternoon, the group gathers for evening critique and discussion with John — an encouraging space to review the day’s work, ask questions, and gain personalized feedback.
This all-inclusive retreat covers lodging, breakfasts, a packed lunch, dinners, instruction, local transportation, and field support, so you can focus entirely on painting, learning, and soaking in the beauty of western Colorado.
Whether you’re looking to strengthen your plein air foundations or reignite your creative spark outdoors, this retreat offers inspiring scenery, expert guidance, and a welcoming community of fellow painters.
About The Artist
John Lintott is a landscape painter based in Grand Junction, Colorado whose work reflects a deep and ongoing dialogue with the natural world. He earned his B.F.A. in painting from Colorado State University in 2001 and, after years balancing art with running a custom framing business, committed fully to painting in 2014.
John’s lifelong love of the outdoors — rooted in childhood wilderness experiences — drives his art and fuels his constant curiosity about light, color, and atmosphere. He paints both en plein air and in the studio, working to translate the emotional and visual experience of a place into compelling oil paintings.
His work has been recognized in numerous national exhibitions, including the Oil Painters of America Western Regional and National shows, and the Colorado Governor’s Art Show. In 2022 he was invited to become a Signature Member of Plein Air Painters of America, and he is also an Out-of-State Artist Member of the California Art Club. John has participated in premier plein air events such as the Zion National Park Plein Air Invitational, the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art, Sedona Plein Air Festival, and many others.
Beyond his painting practice, John has served as co-executive director for the Colorado National Monument Association and organized the Monuments and Canyons Plein Air Event, helping connect artists and audiences with public landscapes through creative engagement.
John lives and works in western Colorado with his wife, Emily, and their three daughters, continually seeking new landscapes and light to inform his evolving body of work.

Weather & Conditions
Late September in western Colorado offers warm, dry days and crisp, clear mornings — perfect for plein air painting. Expect daytime highs in the mid-70s °F (23–25 °C) and cooler evenings in the 50s °F (10–12 °C). Bring layered clothing, a sun hat, and a light jacket for early mornings and evenings. Rain is rare, but weather can change quickly in canyon country.
But, of course — we can’t control the weather!

Welcome to Your Grand Junction Area Painting Retreat
We’re delighted to welcome you to this creative retreat in western Colorado — a place of red rock canyons, winding rivers, vineyard valleys, and wide-open skies.
Colorado Mountain Expeditions was founded with a simple mission: to help people connect more deeply with Colorado’s landscapes through guided outdoor experiences. Based in Winter Park, CME is a licensed Colorado outfitter specializing in small-group adventures that blend exploration, learning, and thoughtful stewardship of the natural world. Our team is passionate about creating meaningful travel experiences that celebrate Colorado’s beauty while supporting responsible and sustainable recreation.
For this special retreat, we’re excited to partner with John Lintott, a respected western Colorado painter whose work captures the color, light, and atmosphere of the high desert. John’s lifelong love of the outdoors — rooted in childhood camping trips — continues to shape his approach to painting and teaching. His instruction blends technical insight with creative encouragement, helping artists interpret the landscape with confidence and personal expression.
Together, CME and John have designed this retreat to unite art, nature, and community in one of Colorado’s most distinctive regions. You’ll explore canyon country, river corridors, and vineyard-dotted valleys while painting, learning, and sharing the experience with fellow creatives.
We look forward to welcoming you to western Colorado for this one-of-a-kind artistic adventure.
