Join Colorado Mountain Expeditions from July 12–15, 2026 for an inspiring plein air painting retreat in Grand Lake, Colorado, led by painter Michael Magrin. This experience blends expert instruction, peaceful mountain scenery, and the charm of Colorado’s premier alpine lake community. For those familiar with the area, travelers coming from the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park will pass through Estes Park, the better-known gateway town.
With a small group of just 10 participants, this retreat offers a close-knit, supportive creative environment perfect for intermediate painters, advanced artists, and those who have painted a few times but are ready to grow their skills. While this trip is not designed for total beginners, it is exceptionally welcoming, relaxed, and encouraging.
Your Mountain Lodge in Grand Lake
Guests will stay in a cozy, comfortable mountain lodge right in Grand Lake, Colorado. The property has the warm, wood-toned charm you’d expect from a classic Colorado retreat, paired with clean, modern comforts. Rooms feature plush bedding, private or semi-private bathrooms, and easy access to indoor gathering spaces where the group will meet each evening for instruction and critique sessions with Michael.
Common areas include a large living-room-style lounge perfect for conversations and drying paintings, a spacious deck surrounded by fresh mountain air, and an outdoor fire pit where guests can unwind after a full day of painting. The central location means you’ll be close to Grand Lake’s historic boardwalk, a variety of shops, and multiple restaurants—all within a short walk or drive.
Meals and Dietary Needs
Each morning begins with a full breakfast buffet, offering hot and cold options to fuel you for long days outdoors. During our painting excursions, participants will enjoy a packed lunch complete with sandwiches or wraps, fresh fruit, snacks, and drinks so you can stay energized while working on location.
Colorado Mountain Expeditions can accommodate most food allergies and dietary restrictions with advance notice.
Dinners are provided on all nights except Monday and Tuesday, when participants will explore Grand Lake’s dining scene. The town is home to numerous excellent restaurants—many of which can seat the entire group together if you choose to dine as a party.
Painting in Grand Lake & Rocky Mountain National Park
Each day, our group will travel short distances to some of the most spectacular and lesser-known painting locations on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) and around the Grand Lake area. This side of the park is quieter and less crowded than Estes Park, offering peaceful settings ideal for plein air artists.
Below is an overview of the kinds of landscapes we’ll explore:
The town’s namesake lake—the largest natural lake in Colorado—offers shimmering reflections, classic mountain silhouettes, and weather that shifts dramatically throughout the day. Painters will have opportunities to capture boats in the marina, morning light on calm water, and the rugged profiles of Mt. Craig and the surrounding peaks. The historic boardwalk and rustic cabins along the lake add character-rich subjects for those who enjoy architectural scenes.
Just south of Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake provides wide-open views with long sightlines, perfect for studying atmospheric perspective. The lake’s inlets, grassy shorelines, and cottonwood groves create a variety of textures and compositions. Elk and moose sightings are common, offering exciting (yet safe!) opportunities to incorporate wildlife into your work.
One of the most breathtaking valleys in the entire national park, Kawuneeche Valley is lined with willow flats, winding streams, and grand views of the Never Summer Mountains. Morning mists and long shadows make this a dream location for plein air artists. Broad meadows alternate with dense stands of lodgepole pine, giving painters endless choices for light, drama, and depth.
A short, scenic walk brings you to the cascading waters of Adams Falls—perfect for studying movement, contrast, and the cooler tones of deep forest light. Further along the trail, the East Inlet opens into a dramatic landscape of marshlands, wildflowers, and enormous granite backdrops. This area offers more intimate compositions and lush textures.
Without committing to a full alpine hike, painters can explore the lower meadows and forest clearings near the Timber Lake Trailhead. This zone offers dappled forest light, aspen groves, and interesting boulder fields that make excellent focal points.
Grand Lake itself is full of charming subjects: the old western-style storefronts, colorful cabins, flower boxes, vintage lodges, and quiet side streets. These scenes are perfect for painters looking to work with line, structure, or the interplay of shadow and warm wood tones.
After a full day outdoors, the group will gather back at the lodge for friendly, supportive indoor critique sessions and instruction with Michael Magrin. These evenings offer time to reflect on your work, refine technique, ask questions, and enjoy conversation in a relaxed, creative environment.
This itinerary outlines the general flow of each day. Exact painting locations may shift based on weather, lighting, wildlife activity, and the creative goals of the group.
Friday, June 12 — Arrival & Welcome Evening
Guests arrive in Grand Lake by 4:00 PM and settle into the lodge. You’ll have time to unpack, get acquainted with your fellow artists, and relax after travel.
In the early evening, the group gathers for introductions and a welcome session with Michael Magrin. He will review the plans for the next several days, discuss materials, and talk about his approach to interpreting the Rockies in paint.
Afterward, enjoy a relaxed dinner together at the lodge and an informal discussion about goals and inspirations for the weekend ahead.
Saturday, June 13 — Kawuneeche Valley & Colorado River Headwaters
The day begins with a full breakfast buffet before loading up for our first painting session inside Rocky Mountain National Park.
Our morning location is the wide-open Kawuneeche Valley, known for long views, meandering waterways, willow flats, and excellent chances to see elk, moose, and soaring raptors. Michael will demonstrate strategies for capturing distant mountain profiles, atmospheric perspective, and shifting morning light.
After a packed lunch in the field, the afternoon session continues along the Colorado River headwaters—an ideal setting for studying reflections, water movement, and the interplay between light and riverbank foliage.
Back at the lodge, we gather in the evening for indoor critique and instruction where Michael offers feedback, answers technical questions, and reviews the day’s work.
Sunday, June 14 — Trail Ridge Road Lookouts & Grand Lake Shoreline
After breakfast, we head back into the Park and ascend part of Trail Ridge Road, stopping at overlook areas and pullouts that showcase dramatic ridges, subalpine forests, and expansive skies. These higher-elevation vistas offer bold compositional opportunities and ever-changing light.
Lunch is enjoyed outdoors before an afternoon painting session along the Grand Lake shoreline. Views of Mt. Baldy, rippling water, weathered docks, and boats create a rich mix of natural and human-made elements to explore with color and brushwork.
In the evening, we return to the lodge for another relaxed critique session, where Michael guides participants through composition improvements, color decisions, and techniques to push their work further.
Monday, June 15 — Adams Falls & Closing Session
Our final morning is spent painting at Adams Falls, one of the most iconic and easily accessible sites near Grand Lake. The short walk brings us to powerful cascades, angular rock formations, lush creekside vegetation, and beautiful pockets of light filtering through the forest—an excellent setting for studying movement, contrast, and expressive brushwork.
This session encourages artists to bring together everything they’ve practiced over the weekend: capturing dynamic water, simplifying complex scenes, and making confident compositional decisions outdoors.
After a final packed lunch and some quiet time to complete last touches, we gather for a closing discussion where Michael offers guidance for continuing plein air work long after the retreat.
The retreat concludes at 12:00 PM, with the CME shuttle returning participants to the Denver area and others departing on their own or extending their stay in Grand Lake.
