This creative retreat welcomes both beginners and experienced painters who want to learn, explore, and paint outdoors in a supportive small-group setting.

A Fully Immersive Rocky Mountain National Park Art Retreat

Participants camp together at a scenic group campsite inside Rocky Mountain National Park, allowing for early morning painting sessions, glowing evening alpenglow, and full days spent immersed in the landscape. With a fully supported basecamp, hot meals provided, and transportation within the park handled by Colorado Mountain Expeditions, guests can focus entirely on their creative process rather than logistics.

Learn Plein Air Oil Painting in the Colorado High Country

Instruction for Beginners and Experienced Artists

Daily art instruction is designed to meet artists where they are. Participants develop skills in observation, composition, color mixing, and capturing natural light while painting outdoors in the field.

Small Group Instruction and Personalized Feedback

With a maximum of eight participants, the retreat remains intentionally small. This allows for individual guidance, thoughtful critique, and a collaborative learning environment where artists can grow their plein air painting practice.

A Creative Outdoor Experience in Rocky Mountain National Park

Painting, Camping, and Exploring the Landscape

Walking distances are moderate and manageable, keeping the emphasis on art rather than mileage. Each day offers opportunities to paint scenic alpine meadows, mountain vistas, and dramatic light unique to Rocky Mountain National Park.

A Unique Colorado Plein Air Painting Retreat

Whether you are picking up a brush for the first time or refining an established plein air practice, this experience offers a rare opportunity to paint, camp, and learn inside Rocky Mountain National Park. Space is limited, and we invite you to join us for several days of creativity, connection, and time outdoors.

We understand that art supplies—especially oil paints—can be expensive for artists at any level, so participants may email MelanieDamoreArt@gmail.com to rent or purchase a ready-made painting kit designed specifically for this trip and have it ready when they arrive.

More Information

Schedule

The trip begins with an afternoon meetup in Estes Park before heading into Rocky Mountain National Park and establishing our basecamp at Glacier Basin Group Campground. Once camp is set up, guests will gather for a relaxed camp orientation and a hot dinner prepared by CME. The evening concludes with an artist-led welcome session that introduces the goals of the trip, reviews materials, and offers an initial discussion of technique and approach, setting the tone for several immersive days of painting in one of Colorado’s most inspiring landscapes.

The following two days are dedicated entirely to painting on location throughout Rocky Mountain National Park. Each morning begins with a hot breakfast at camp before traveling by CME van to carefully selected painting sites chosen for their light, composition, and variety. Participants will spend extended time painting en plein air, with the artist providing guidance and individual feedback throughout the day. Walking distances are intentionally kept short—up to approximately two miles total per day—so energy can be focused on observation and painting rather than hiking. Packed lunches are enjoyed in the field to allow for uninterrupted creative time. Evenings return to camp for a hot dinner followed by group critique, offering a supportive space to reflect on the day’s work, ask questions, and deepen technical understanding.

On the final morning, the group will enjoy a hot breakfast before breaking down camp and returning to Estes Park. Guests can expect to be back at their vehicles by late morning. Participants will leave with new work, refined skills, and fresh inspiration drawn from time spent painting in one of Colorado’s most iconic landscapes.

This schedule is intentionally designed to balance structure and flexibility, allowing painters the time and space to work deeply while benefiting from daily instruction and a small-group setting. With limited space and a thoughtfully paced itinerary, this trip offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself fully in plein air painting in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Participants will receive detailed information about the exact meeting location in Estes Park prior to the trip. This will include the name of the parking lot where we will meet, instructions for overnight parking, and guidance on how to obtain any required parking permit for your vehicle.

For participants traveling from out of state or flying into the area, using a shuttle service from Denver International Airport to Estes Park is often the easiest option. Estes Park Shuttle offers regular scheduled service between Denver International Airport and Estes Park and can drop passengers directly in town. Reservations are recommended, especially during the summer season.

Another option to consider is Colorado Canyon Connection, a local transportation provider that offers airport transfers and private shuttle services to and from Estes Park.

These services allow guests to arrive in Estes Park without needing a rental car and can simplify logistics for those flying in.

Additional meeting details, parking instructions, and permit information will be sent to registered participants closer to the trip departure date.

This trip represents exactly why Colorado Mountain Expeditions exists: to create well-designed, thoughtfully guided experiences that help people slow down, connect more deeply with wild places, and spend meaningful time doing what they love. For us, the mountains aren’t just a backdrop—they’re a place for learning, creativity, and shared experience.

This plein air painting trip in Rocky Mountain National Park brings together a small group of artists, a professional instructor, and a carefully supported basecamp so you can focus on what matters most. We handle the logistics, the meals, and the planning so you can arrive ready to paint, learn, and be present. From quiet mornings at camp to long days working on location and reflective evenings spent in conversation and critique, this experience is designed to feel intentional, unhurried, and deeply rewarding.

At CME, we believe that the best trips balance structure with flexibility, professionalism with warmth, and expertise with curiosity. We keep our groups small, move thoughtfully through the landscape, and prioritize experiences that feel personal rather than transactional. Whether this is your first time painting in the mountains or a continuation of a long-held practice, our goal is for you to leave feeling inspired, supported, and connected—to the place, to your work, and to the people you shared it with.

We’re excited to welcome you to this experience and to spend a few days together creating, learning, and living in one of Colorado’s most iconic landscapes.

We’re glad you’re joining us.

All of your camping and personal gear as well as food provisions are carried for you on this progressive five-day hike. The staff driven support trucks go to locations close to the Colorado Trail via jeep road where a community camp is set up.

Your only concern is to have a great time hiking each day. You will need to set up your own personal tent, but after that is done, you can come to the community tent, relax, clean up and eat your evening meal that has already been planned and prepared for you.

In the morning, while you are taking down your tent and packing your gear, we are preparing a wholesome warm breakfast for you.

A variety of fresh lunch items and snacks are put out everyday prior to hiking so you can self-design whatever you want to take with you to eat while hiking.

Our 18 x 30 ‘ community tent is used as our combination kitchen, dining room, and living room. Delicious and health-conscious breakfasts and dinners are served inside. Camp chairs are provided for each hiker, as well as plates, utensils, and mugs. Hikers will make their trail lunches from a large selection of sandwich fixings, fruits, veggies, and other trail food.

A community latrine (toilet) is also set up for all hikers and staff. The latrine is screened with tarps to provide privacy. We practice Leave No Trace Principles.
