Join us June 15th to 18th for a relaxed and inspiring outdoor workshop at beautiful Wellington Lake designed especially for beginner artists looking to experience the joy of painting in nature.

Set in the stunning scenery near Wellington Lake outside Bailey, Colorado, this intimate four-day trip brings together creative exploration and wilderness beauty without demanding long hikes — all prime painting locations are just steps from camp. You’ll camp in tents with a small group (limited to 8 guests) that creates a supportive, encouraging environment perfect for first-time plein air painters or anyone wanting to grow their confidence with oils.

Our adventure begins Monday at 2 p.m. at the Wooly Mammoth Park-and-Ride in Golden, Colorado, where we’ll gather, load up, and head an hour into the mountains. Once at camp, you’ll settle in, enjoy a delicious hot dinner, and meet our resident artist, Katy Betz, for a relaxed introductory session to set the tone for the days ahead.

Katy Betz brings over 15 years of teaching experience and a deep passion for nature, creativity, and artistic expression. She is a professional artist and educator whose work blends observation, imagination, and a love for storytelling through paint. Katy’s gentle, encouraging instruction helps new artists learn foundational techniques while discovering their own creative voice. (Katy Betz Studio)

Each full day begins with a hearty hot breakfast by your guides followed by thoughtful instruction from Katy as she leads you through the basics of plein air oil painting — from seeing light and color in the landscape to composing a painting outdoors. After a midday break for lunch, you’ll return to your easel to continue developing your work, gaining hands-on experience and personal guidance. Evenings feature delicious meals and friendly critique sessions with Katy, where you’ll reflect on your progress, exchange ideas, and deepen your artistic awareness.

Whether you choose to return to the same scene or explore new subjects near the lake, this workshop offers plenty of time to experiment, learn, and create. By the final morning, you’ll break camp with fresh inspiration, new skills, and perhaps a finished canvas (or two) to cherish. We’ll return to Golden by about 11 a.m. on Thursday.

This unique CME experience blends art education and nature enjoyment into a warm, welcoming retreat. Perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to paint outdoors with guidance and encouragement, CME and Katy Betz invite you to discover the joy of putting brush to canvas — surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and supportive company.

Spots are limited — reserve your place today and start your creative journey with us!

We’re excited to welcome you to this relaxed and inspiring plein air painting retreat at Wellington Lake in the Colorado foothills.

Colorado Mountain Expeditions (CME) was founded with a simple mission: to help people connect more deeply with Colorado’s mountain landscapes through professionally guided outdoor experiences. CME is a licensed Colorado outfitter specializing in small-group trips that emphasize thoughtful planning, meaningful learning experiences, and a strong connection to the natural world. Our team is committed to creating well-organized trips that invite participants to slow down, enjoy the outdoors, and feel comfortable in a supportive group environment.

For this trip, we are pleased to partner with artist Katy Betz. Katy’s work is grounded in careful observation of light, color, and atmosphere, and her teaching style encourages artists to slow down, look closely, and respond creatively to the landscape around them. Her instruction is welcoming and accessible for beginners, while still offering depth for those looking to grow their skills. Katy’s approach emphasizes painting as a way of seeing and experiencing a place more fully.

This workshop takes place at a frontcountry campsite near Wellington Lake, where beautiful painting locations are just a short walk from camp. Participants will camp in tents and spend their days painting outdoors, surrounded by forest, water, and open sky. Instruction and critique sessions take place in a friendly, low-pressure setting, allowing each participant to work at their own pace while receiving guidance and encouragement.

By combining art instruction with time immersed in nature, this trip is designed to offer a rewarding balance of creativity, relaxation, and connection to the landscape. We look forward to welcoming you to a memorable and creatively fulfilling experience at Wellington Lake.

Yes—very common. Across our hiking, biking, and art trips, a large percentage of our guests sign up solo. These experiences are designed to bring together people who share a passion for the outdoors and adventure, so you’ll be joining a group of like-minded individuals from day one. Our guides foster a welcoming, inclusive environment that makes it easy to connect—whether you’re on the trail, or relaxing back at camp.

We also regularly have couples and small groups of friends join our trips, which adds to the overall dynamic and makes each group unique. No matter how people arrive, everyone quickly blends into one cohesive group. There’s no pressure—just a supportive, social atmosphere where you can engage as much or as little as you’d like.

By the end of the week, it’s common for solo travelers to leave with new friendships and future adventure partners. Many guests find that coming alone actually enhances the experience, giving them the opportunity to fully immerse themselves and meet new people along the way.
