What Makes This Colorado Trail Bike Trip Special

Nearly Continuous Singletrack

Riders experience nearly continuous singletrack, technical climbs, and thrilling descents, some of the best sections for mountain biking on the Colorado Trail. This Durango mountain bike tour is fully supported so riders can focus on the trail while our crew transports gear between camps.

Ride at Your Own Pace

Riders are free to move at their own speed throughout the day. A sweep guide rides at the back of the group to assist with navigation, minor mechanical issues, and first aid if needed.

Slackpacking for a Better Ride

Instead of carrying heavy overnight gear, riders bring only the essentials for the day: lunch and snacks, water for the day (2-3 liters), rain gear and riding layers, personal bike repair kit.

All camping equipment and personal bags are transported between camps by our support crew, allowing you to ride lighter, faster, and more comfortably.

The Riding Experience

Colorado Trail Segments 25–28

This trip explores Segments 25 through 28 of the Colorado Trail, widely considered some of the most scenic and rewarding sections of the entire route. Riders will start their journey at Molas Pass just south of Silverton Colorado. From Molas Pass, the Colorado Trail winds its way through the San Juans around the backside of  Engineer Mountain and behind Purgatory Ski Area. The trail ends in with a day of nearly all descent to Durango.

Over four days riders will experience some of the best singletrack in Colorado, going up and over high alpine passes and through remote backcountry forests all while enjoying fast decents and thrilling climbs with expansive mountain views. Each day’s ride typically takes 4–7 hours depending on pace, leaving plenty of time to relax and enjoy camp each evening.

Camp Life and Support

Comfortable Backcountry Camps

At the end of each day’s ride, riders arrive at a fully supported backcountry campsite where personal gear has already been delivered.

Riders set up their own tents and settle into camp while enjoying a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere with fellow riders.

Guest Tent and Camp Comfort

Our guest tent acts as a communal living room where riders can unwind after a day on the trail.

Amenities include comfortable camp chairs and coolers stocked with drinks in our "living room" tent. We also provide a coffee and tea bar with a variety of teas, sweeteners, and creamers. Guests also have acces to card games and books to enjoy during their time in camp. Guests are also welcome to bring beer or wine and we bring along a cooler just for BYOBs.

Fresh Meals Prepared by Your Guides

Breakfast

Each morning begins with a hot continental-style breakfast designed to fuel a full day of riding. Coffee and tea are always available.

On the first morning, riders enjoy a packed hot breakfast during the shuttle to the trailhead.

Lunch

Lunches are build-your-own sandwiches with deli meats, cheeses, or peanut butter and jelly. Fresh fruit, vegetables, and a variety of trail snacks are also provided so riders can pack exactly what they want for the day.

Dinner

After a day on the trail, riders enjoy a hearty and flavorful dinner prepared by the guides. Meals are designed to restore energy and celebrate the day’s adventure.

Dietary needs including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets are fully accommodated.

More Information

The four-day Colorado Trail mountain bike adventure covers a total of 75 miles, with each day offering a manageable but rewarding ride. Riders will enjoy a mix of challenging climbs, thrilling descents, and nearly continuous singletrack. Each ride is expected to take between 4 and 7 hours, allowing riders to enjoy the trail at their own pace with full guidance and support along the way.

Weather

During mid to late August in the San Juan Mountains, the weather is generally favorable for mountain biking, with warm days and cool nights typical of high‑country summer conditions. Average daytime temperatures tend to be in the low to mid‑70s °F (about 70–80°F), while nighttime lows often drop into the 50s °F.

Although August is still part of the monsoon season in southwestern Colorado, precipitation usually comes as brief afternoon showers or thunderstorms, especially at higher elevations. Sunny periods typically dominate the day, with long daylight hours giving plenty of time for riding and enjoying the scenery.

Because this is mountain weather at elevation, conditions can vary noticeably between lower and higher terrain. Temperatures will be cooler at altitude, and thunderstorms can develop quickly in the afternoon. To help riders avoid the highest risk of storms, rides will start early in the morning, allowing most of the day’s riding to be completed well before afternoon thunderstorm activity is most likely.

Recommended Hotels (Night Before or After)

Because of the early meeting time, we strongly recommend staying in Durango the night before the trip or after the trip if you would like to enjoy the town. These hotels are very close (less than a mile) to the Transit Center, making them a good option for riders who are flying into Durango.

Double Tree
Holiday Inn Express
The Strater Hotel
The General Palmer Hotel
Nobody's Inn

Durango rooms fill quickly during peak season, so we encourage riders to book early.

Ending the Trip

We plan to finish the ride and return to the Durango Transit Center between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM on the final day, providing flexibility for riders. Those returning to Denver will have time for the approximately seven-hour drive. Alternatively, riders may choose to stay in Durango and enjoy the town after the trip.

Meeting Logistics – Flying In

For riders flying into Durango for the Colorado Trail mountain bike adventure, the nearest airport is Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO). The airport is located just outside of town, so after landing, riders will need to arrange transportation into Durango. Options include local taxi services or shuttle companies. Ride-share apps like Uber or Lyft may work in Durango, but availability is not guaranteed. Mountain towns of Colorado typcially do not have reliable app-based ride-share services. Shuttle information can be found here.

For a smooth start to your trip, we recommend planning your arrival the night before your first day on the trail. This ensures you have enough time to reach the area near the Durango Transit Center, settle in, get your rental bike, and prepare for an early departure.

If you have any questions about flights, local transportation, or shuttle logistics, riders can contact:
