3-Day Rocky Mountain National Park Backpacking Trip

A Fully Supported Backpacking Experience in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park | 3 Days / 2 Nights | 7/24 to 7/26

Experience one of the most iconic alpine landscapes in the United States on a fully supported 3-day backpacking trip through Rocky Mountain National Park. This journey takes you deep into the backcountry, where forested valleys give way to high alpine basins, rugged peaks, and remote camps far from the crowds.

This trip is designed for people who want to experience multi-day backpacking for the first time in a structured, supportive setting. Our guides handle the logistics, provide on-trail instruction, and support the group throughout the entire journey so you can focus on the experience, not the planning.

Because this is a point-to-point backpacking trip, you will move through multiple backcountry zones over the course of the journey, camping in different designated areas each night based on National Park Service permits.

The Experience

This is a true backcountry journey, not a basecamp-style trip. Each day, you’ll travel deeper into Rocky Mountain National Park with a fully loaded backpack, experiencing a gradual transition from lower elevation forests into high alpine terrain.

The pace is intentionally moderate, with time built in to rest, adjust to altitude, and take in the landscape along the way. Evenings are spent in designated backcountry camps where the group relaxes, shares meals, and experiences the quiet of the high country.

Unlike a guided hiking or camping trip where you return to a base each night, this is a continuous wilderness experience where you travel and camp in new locations each day.

Difficulty

This trip is considered easy to moderate and is designed for active guests who are comfortable hiking several hours per day on uneven mountain terrain while carrying a backpack.

No prior backpacking experience is required. However, participants should be prepared for sustained physical activity at altitude, including uphill and downhill hiking.

Our guides manage pacing, provide support throughout the journey, and help ensure the experience remains comfortable and achievable for the group.

Itinerary

This is a multi-day backpacking trip that begins and ends at Sprague Lake Trailhead, traveling through different designated backcountry camps over the course of three days in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Each night is spent at a different permitted backcountry campsite, assigned by the National Park Service. Because campsite permits are limited and regulated, the exact route may vary slightly depending on availability and conditions at the time of the trip.

One day of the itinerary includes an optional side hike to Chasm Lake, depending on group energy, weather, and conditions.

Full day-by-day mileage and elevation details are listed in the Schedule and Profile Tab.

What’s Included

This is a fully supported backpacking trip designed to remove the complexity of planning a wilderness experience on your own.

Your guides handle backcountry permits, navigation, meal planning, group equipment, and safety throughout the trip. All meals during the journey are included, along with group camping gear and on-trail instruction.

The focus is on providing a seamless, well-supported introduction to multi-day backpacking in a national park setting.

Who This Trip Is For

This trip is ideal for active travelers who want to experience their first backpacking adventure in a guided and supportive environment. Many guests are comfortable day hikers who are ready to step into overnight backcountry travel but prefer not to manage the logistics and complexity of planning it themselves.

No backpacking experience is required, but guests should be comfortable hiking for several hours in mountain terrain and carrying a loaded backpack.

This is a structured, approachable introduction to multi-day wilderness travel in one of the most scenic national parks in the country.

Reserve Your Spot

Group sizes are intentionally limited due to National Park Service permit restrictions and to maintain a high-quality guided experience. Availability is limited and often fills in advance during peak summer months.

If you are looking for a supported and structured way to experience your first multi-day backpacking trip, this is one of the most accessible ways to do it in Rocky Mountain National Park.

  • Professional guiding from experienced staff who handle logistics and keep you safe and informed.
  • All meals and snacks throughout the trip, including breakfasts and dinners prepared for you and lunch fixings laid out each day.
  • Transportation during the adventure as outlined on the trip page.
  • Support for camping or basecamp gear logistics, such as transport of group gear and group camp setup at campsites or designated locations. (sorry, we don't setup your personal tent for you)

Yes—very common. Across our hiking, biking, and art trips, a large percentage of our guests sign up solo. These experiences are designed to bring together people who share a passion for the outdoors and adventure, so you’ll be joining a group of like-minded individuals from day one. Our guides foster a welcoming, inclusive environment that makes it easy to connect—whether you’re on the trail, or relaxing back at camp.

We also regularly have couples and small groups of friends join our trips, which adds to the overall dynamic and makes each group unique. No matter how people arrive, everyone quickly blends into one cohesive group. There’s no pressure—just a supportive, social atmosphere where you can engage as much or as little as you’d like.

By the end of the week, it’s common for solo travelers to leave with new friendships and future adventure partners. Many guests find that coming alone actually enhances the experience, giving them the opportunity to fully immerse themselves and meet new people along the way.
