What Makes This Park So Special?

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring mountain landscapes in the country, drawing over 4 million visitors each year to experience its dramatic peaks and alpine scenery. The park is home to more than 60 species of mammals and nearly 280 bird species, making wildlife encounters with elk, bighorn sheep, moose, and mule deer a highlight for many visitors. With over 350 miles of hiking trails and unforgettable views along Trail Ridge Road — the highest continuous paved road in the United States — RMNP offers everything from peaceful valley walks to high-altitude adventures that leave a lasting impression of Colorado’s wild high country.

Putting the "Mountain" in

Rocky Mountain National Park

The park’s high-elevation summits create a dramatic skyline, with Longs Peak standing as the tallest at 14,259 feet and serving as one of Colorado’s famed fourteeners. There are 124 named peaks at 8,789 feet or higher, including more than 98 above 11,000 feet and 20 above 13,000 feet, showcasing the rugged alpine terrain. Many of these lofty summits are clustered along the Continental Divide and in ranges like the Mummy Range, with well-known high peaks such as Mount Meeker, Chiefs Head Peak, Hagues Peak, and Ypsilon Mountain all rising above 13,000 feet. These peaks not only offer challenging objectives for climbers and mountaineers but also shape the park’s weather patterns, watersheds, and ecosystems, supporting delicate alpine tundra above tree line where specialized plants and animals thrive.

Lakes of the Rockies: Tranquil and Wild

The park’s landscape is dotted with hundreds of stunning lakes, ranging from small alpine tarns to larger glacially-carved bodies of water that mirror the surrounding peaks. Trail Ridge Road and popular hiking routes provide access to iconic lakes such as Bear Lake, Sprague Lake, and Lily Lake, each offering serene views and abundant wildlife. Many high-altitude lakes, like Sky Pond and Emerald Lake, sit above tree line and are fed by melting snow and mountain streams, creating crystal-clear waters perfect for photography and quiet reflection. These lakes not only enhance the scenic beauty of the mountains but also provide essential habitats for fish, amphibians, and waterfowl, making them a vital part of the park’s delicate alpine ecosystem.
